Access to Renagel

Genzyme is committed to assisting patients with stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in obtaining access to Renagel® (sevelamer hydrochloride).

To help patients access Renagel, Genzyme offers the following:

Renassist

Renassist is a service dedicated to helping patients determine how they can best access Renagel through their current health insurance.

Service Features and Facts:

  • Provides comprehensive reports outlining patients' prescription benefits through either a retail or mail-order pharmacy
  • Supports the appeal process for patients whose insurance benefit limits use or does not cover Renagel
  • Obtains prior authorization for Renagel, if necessary, to facilitate prescribing
  • Acts in accordance with patient privacy regulations (HIPAA) to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Offered at no cost
  • Insurance benefits verified for more than 60,000 patients.

Renagel Medicare Part D Assistance Program

This program provides a free supply of Renagel to eligible Medicare Part D patients who cannot afford their co-payments or co-insurance for Renagel with their Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

Eligible patients must:

  • Be enrolled in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP or MA-PD)
  • Not have alternative coverage for Renagel in addition to their Part D prescription coverage
  • Have an estimated annual household income for 2008 of less than or equal to 300% of the federal poverty level (FPL)
  • Not qualify for the limited income subsidy (LIS)
  • Patients must also have spent at least 3% of their estimated annual household income to date in 2008 on their prescription drugs (This number is easily calculated on the program application)

The Renagel Medicare Part D Assistance Program is administered by the American Kidney Fund (AKF) and supported by Genzyme's donation of drug, pharmacy fees, and shipping.

Renagel® (sevelamer hydrochloride) is indicated for the control of serum phosphorus in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) on dialysis. Renagel is contraindicated in patients with hypophosphatemia or bowel obstruction. Caution should be exercised in patients with dysphagia, swallowing disorders, severe gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders including severe constipation or major GI tract surgery. Common adverse events reported with Renagel include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and constipation. Other events reported include pruritus, rash, fecal impaction, and intestinal obstruction. Drug-drug interactions may occur with some medications and should be taken into consideration when instructing patients how to take Renagel. Patients should be informed to take Renagel with meals and to adhere to their prescribed diets. See Renagel Full Prescribing Information.
